If you are fortunate enough to have naturally healthy and youthful skin, congratulations! Appreciate this gift and continue to prioritize the well-being of your skin. Our skin, being the largest organ of our body, serves several crucial functions:
It acts as a protective barrier against microorganisms.
It helps in retaining body moisture.
It shields the body from harmful UV radiation.
It controls the entry of foreign substances.
It aids in the production of Vitamin D.
The skin barrier plays a crucial role in protecting our skin by preventing water loss and blocking the entry of harmful microorganisms or irritants. A healthy and intact skin barrier results in a smooth, hydrated, clear, and even-toned complexion. So, what does this mean for skincare routines of a healthy skin?
Since normal skin doesn't have any specific requirements, the focus is on maintaining its health:
Opt for a simple, gentle skincare routine.
Use mild cleansers and moisturizers that hydrate and nourish the skin.
Choose products with natural and beneficial ingredients. Even if your skin isn't sensitive, oily, or dry, it's advisable to avoid harsh components like synthetic fragrances, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), and alcohol.
Use gentle cleansing products followed by hydrating formulas to keep your skin well-moisturized.
Consider incorporating a nourishing face oil or serum into your regimen to shield your skin from external factors, combat aging, and maintain its health. These products also serve as an excellent base for makeup application.
Exfoliate your skin once a week to eliminate dead skin cells and maintain a fresh and smooth appearance.
Make healthy lifestyle choices and always use sunscreen! Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily is essential to safeguard your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.
If you want to make your own face oil, there is an abundance of oils you can choose from. When oils are applied to the skin, they fill up small spaces between epidermal cells. They are emollient and therefore soften, smooth, and lubricate the skin. They supply the skin with essential fatty acids and vitamins and help the skin to function properly. If you have normal skin, you can choose lighter and drier oils, such as Jojoba, Rosehip, Hemp, Evening Primrose, and Borage Oil. Choose a good quality oil, ideally cold-pressed and organic, and keep in mind its shelf-life, which is between 6 and 24 months, depending on the oil you choose. To extend its shelf-life, make sure you use a newly opened bottle of oil, buy carrier oils from reputable suppliers, and use oils within their recommended BBE or Period After Opening. To slow down oxidation, most carrier oils can be stored in the fridge or freezer until you are ready to use them. As professional skincare formulators, we also add an antioxidant to the oil, e.g., Vitamin E, which also adds additional benefits for the skin.
