Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on sensitive skin, a subject that resonates deeply with me. One of the reasons for studying and formulating natural skincare was also because I've dealt with facial sensitivity for as long as I can remember, and it intensified during menopause. I experienced inflammation around my nose, diagnosed as rosacea, whenever I encounter climate changes or other triggers. Despite trying numerous medical treatments, both topical and internal, I often faced side effects, and the solutions where never sustainable in the long run. Does that sound familiar to you? If so, continue exploring to learn more about the causes and potential natural treatments for sensitive skin.

Characteristic of Sensitive Skin

When assessing sensitive skin, dermatologists identify reactions such as pustules, bumps, erosion, extreme dryness, and a propensity for blushing. Many individuals share the belief that certain skincare ingredients can trigger sensitivity, leading to inflammation, stinging, burning, dryness, and discomfort. The exact causes of sensitive skin remain largely unclear, but several factors may contribute to these reactions.

Overly dry or damaged skin can result in rashes and irritations.

A compromised skin barrier, often due to inappropriate skincare practices, hormonal fluctuations, or nutrient deficiencies, can leave the skin vulnerable to environmental stressors.

Excessive exposure to harmful environmental factors like sun, wind, or extreme temperatures can exacerbate sensitivity.

Allergic reactions from repeated contact with irritants or allergens may manifest as conditions like eczema or rosacea.

The overuse of harsh detergents can deplete the skin of its natural oils and other protectors that keep the skin hydrated, balanced, and healthy.

Poor dietary and lifestyle choices, including not drinking enough water, poor nutrition, hygiene, stress, and not enough sleep, can also lead to sensitive skin or eczema flare-ups.

Genetic factors may also influence skin sensitivity.

Skincare Solutions for Sensitive Skin

Embrace a straightforward and gentle skincare routine. Handle your skin with care, opting for mild, natural cleansers and skincare products. Excessive cleansing and exposure to environmental factors and other irritants can worsen sensitive skin.

Choose products with minimal ingredients and little to no fragrances. Steer clear of those containing alcohol, as it can cause significant dryness. Also, avoid harsh ingredients and detergents that deplete the skin's natural oils. Stay away from products that are artificially scented or include potentially irritating components, like alcohols or retinoids.

Include calming and soothing ingredients in your skincare routine. Ingredients that reduce inflammation will soothe the skin and facilitate a quicker and easier healing process.

Enhance the skin's protective barrier. A damaged barrier causes sensitive skin, so products that aid in its repair can be highly beneficial.

Best Facial Oils for Sensitive Skin:

Opting for a high-quality oil, ideally organic and cold-pressed, is an excellent choice for treating sensitive skin, as these oils are both therapeutic and protective. We look for oils that are high in GLA (gamma linolenic acid) and other essential fatty acids, but avoid oils with a high content of oleic acid. Oils that benefit sensitive skin, whether for the body or face, are typically calming, anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, and UV-absorbent. Calendula, Evening Primrose, Hempseed, Kiwiseed, Kukui nut seed, Passionfruit seed, Raspberry seed, Rosehip, or Safflower are all viable options.

Our Chamomile Facial Oil is my go-to daily solution for maintaining healthy, smooth, soft, hydrated, and balanced skin. It features a mix of EVENING PRIMROSE (a powerful skin cell regenerator with softening and smoothing properties, rich in GLA), CALENDULA (known for its strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties that aid in skin repair and healing), KIWI SEED (rich in alpha-linolenic acid, prevents transepidermal water loss and enhances the skin's barrier repair function), HEMP SEED (a soothing, softening, and healing oil rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that boost barrier repair and relieve itching or irritation), OLIVE SQUALANE (a very light oil that helps balance sebum production and moisturizes the skin), VITAMIN E (an antioxidant), and my ultimate favorite essential oil for sensitive skin: CHAMOMILE.

Chamomile is one of the few essential oils I apply to my face, and its gentle yet effective nature truly stands out. Renowned for its safety, it offers soothing and calming effects that many cherish. Chamomile has a wide range of use in Aroma Therapy, but in context with sensitive skin treatments we appreciate its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities, making it particularly beneficial for sensitive skin, as it helps to reduces rashes and irritation. It's especially useful for those with dry or sensitive skin, and it can also assist with acne and blemishes. Personally, when I face occasional breakouts—mostly triggered by stress or drastic weather changes—using a chamomile infusion is my go-to remedy. Chamomile has become my trusted ally, and I look forward to sharing more about its remarkable and often overlooked health benefits.
